The poster, Dan, says "They serve Daegu (SE Korea) style food that is spicy, filling, and flavorful." And he is right. The food is very spicy. While it was perfect for me, my Korean friend was suffering a little. We ordered the pancakes and the galbijjim which were talked about in the article. Both were fantastic. We also ordered a pitcher of makgeolli (Korean rice alcohol), which was really great for cooling the fires of the galbijjim.

Galbijjim is Korean style braised short ribs. The short ribs are slowly cooked for a long time in a sauce until the meat is so tender it basically falls off the bone. The sauce is not normal spicy, but here they they cook the ribs in a flavorful spicy garlic filled sauce. It's so great you'll be dreaming about returning within days.

Spicy Galbijjim

The pork pancakes were also good. They had really good flavor and also were a good break from the spicy galbijjim. All of this was more than enough food for two people and we ended up taking some of the pancakes home, which were a good snack later on. The restaurant was nice enough to include some dipping sauce to go as well.

Pork Pancakes

Dong In Dong is great. Well, for the most part anyway. It started off not so well because of some scamming taxi drivers and some rude hotel staff. The taxi driver problems are, unfortunately, somewhat normal, but hotel staff in Thailand are usually always nice and friendly. I am happy to say that after the whole trip, these incidents were the exception and not the norm.

Bangkok was Bangkok. It's a big city that comes with big city issues: overcrowded, lots of tourist, big city attitude, etc. Anyway, despite being the rainy season I really lucked out and had very little rain.

Stayed at the Davis Hotel. I've now stayed there three times. I have to say I think the quality of the hotel is slipping somewhat. However, I still enjoyed my stay there. The hotel is located a little far from the Sky Train and the small road gets really jammed up at times, which makes taking a taxi long. I like this hotel for what you get. You can get a pretty nice room for a very nice price. This is because Bangkok is a pretty inexpensive city. I also like it because it is located near two of my favorite restaurants.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is a place I found last summer right near Emporium shopping mall on Sukhumvit Soi 24 (Sky Train: Phrom Phong). They do a really nice job with there Thai food. They are a little on the more expensive side for Bangkok, but the quality is good and the food is authentic. One time I overheard a local explaining to his dinner quest that "this restaurant challenges foreigners because the food is authentically spicy." And he was right. Just then I noticed two Brits next to me suffering from the spiciness of their food.

Lemongrass' spicy red curry without coconut milk is face scorchingly hot, but oh so good. Their green coconut curry can also be fairly spicy. Since I love spicy food this is a big plus in my book.
The quality of this restaurant has declined a little, but the food is still good sometimes.

Thong Lee

Thong Lee has one of my favorite Thai dishes of all time: pork fried in shrimp paste. Their food is of good quality and their prices are fantastically cheap. You can eat a lot here twice for what you pay at Lemongrass. It's no frills and the presentation is minimal. It's small and looks a little old (been there for 60 years). But, that all makes it my kind of place. Basically, Thong Lee is a small mom and pop restaurant where the food tastes very homemade, kind of like your mom or grandma made it.

Pictured above is Tom Yum, Red Curry, and Pork Fried in Shrimp Paste.

I've also had the green curry and the sweet fried noodles. All the dishes here are great. If someone asked me what my top 5 places I wanted to eat where location didn't matter, Thong Lee would be on that list. It's located about halfway up Sukhumvit Soi 20.

I also enjoyed some pretty good activities; visited the Moon Bar @ Vertigo (first pic), located on the roof of the Banyan Tree Hotel and listen to live jazz music at the Bamboo Bar in the famed Mandarin Oriental Hotel (below).

Despite my body's aversion to heat and humidity, I really like Thailand. This visit was short, but I will return soon. Till next time...

Korean Grilled Eel in Ichon

I've been wanting to try Korean grilled eel for a long time. I have been a sushi eel fan for a long time now and after reading this article on Seoul Eats, I have been eager to go eat some here in Korea. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it to an eel place the last two visits.

Luckily, today my friend suggested we meet up at an eel restaurant in Ichon. Hurray! I finally got to have eel.

Eel in Korean is Jangeo (pronounced Jang-oh). It is popular in the summer and is supposed to be good for stamina.

The restaurant doesn't really have a name. The sign reads Jangeo gui, which literally means grilled eel. I think the place is pretty well known because they had posters outside showing them being on multiple tv shows.

So, how was it? It was great! The eel was perfectly grilled and the special soy sauce (kind of like teriyaki sauce) was rich and sweet. It is very similar to Japanese grilled eel, but I think the taste is much better. It's more rich and savory.

The eel is 22,000 won per serving and comes with a great eel soup, side dishes (banchan), lettuce and other things for wrapping. In Korea it is the norm to eat grilled meat in lettuce wraps. Along with the lettuce, the eel comes with pickled radish leaves, fresh ginger, fresh slices of garlic, and gochujang (a fermented hot pepper paste). Honestly, the gochujang and garlic overpowered the taste of the eel and I found it was best to wrap the eel with only a little of the fresh ginger.

The full spread.

The grilled eel.

The eel soup.

I really enjoyed the grilled eel. It was really a light meal and I can see why it is popular for summertime. When I was finished I felt full but not stuffed. I also felt like it gave me a pick-me-up so, maybe it is good for stamina. I think I am totally hooked. I will certainly be going for more eel soon.

Directions: Ichon Station (line 4): Go out exit 5 and walk about 10 minutes. Its just past a Domino's Pizza on the second floor.

Le Saigon

If a there was a contest for which restaurant gets to be graced with my presence the most while I am in Seoul, then Le Saigon is certainly in the lead and may well run away with the crown. For the past few months I have started to become mildly obsessed with Vietnam. Not sure why, but thoughts of visiting the country and eating Vietnamese foods have been occupying my mind since about the middle of spring. I have even read through a large portion of the section of my Lonley Planet Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos book as well as Graham Greene's "The Quiet American."
Anyway, I knew Le Saigon was here because I ate here with a friend when I was here in April. However, I thought the Phở was just good, but not great. It certainly was better than some of the bad Pho (as in not Phở) chains I've tried around Seoul on previous visits. Mostly I was unhappy with the noodles quality on my last visit.
Maybe it was an off day (for them or me) because I am happy to say that my opinion has changed. I have now had the Phở twice and I was quite happy both times. I got the set menu A which comes with fresh spring rolls and a choice of beef or chicken Phở (I will certainly never get the chicken). The spring rolls are really tasty, filled with fresh herbs and vegetables. I was not happy with the dipping sauces though. They seemed to lack flavor.

Beef Phở

Fresh Spring Rolls

Below is my most recent lunch: Phở, fresh spring rolls, and Hanoi beer. They make some pretty good Thai curries. I tend to stick to curries when I go for Thai food, and I am a big green curry fan. I tried the green and red curries on my visits. I really liked the green curry, but I thought the red curry lacked something and was just okay. The vegetables were not exactly what I would call traditional, but I've seen other Thai restaurants use them as well. I especially liked the pumpkin (not the jack-o-lantern kind) in the green curry. Another bonus was finding real kaffir lime leaf pieces in my curry. The fresh (live) leaves have become hard to import in some places recently.
From what I could hear from the kitchen the cooks are Thai, a good sign I guess. Although I have had bad Thai food made by Thai people and some very good Thai food made by some non-Thai people. My only real complaints for Buddha's Belly are that they don't give enough rice and they don't have pork. I'm not really a fan of beef and I get too much chicken in Switzerland.
Directions: Noksapyeong station (line 6) exit 2. Go straight and take the underpass. The people I subletted from mentioned this place so I had to check it out. Bao specializes in wok-fried noodle dishes. You can get a pretty good amount of food for under $10. First you choose the type of noodles (or rice) you want. Then you get to choose from five different sauces: Chinese, Singapore, Thai, Malay, and Korean. You can also choose your vegetables (and egg too), and then for a little extra charge you can add tofu, chicken, pork, beef, squid, prawns, kaffir lime leaf, coriander, lemongrass, basil, and cashews. I went with the wide rice noodle with Malay sauce, "a silky peanut/coconut blend with a touch of heat."
Directions: Noksapyeong station (line 6) exit 2. I have to say I am compiling quite a list of places to check out. Some things though just soar to the top of the list, like dumplings. I have a mild obsession for dumplings which started when I was pretty young. Our Taiwanese neighbor would cook all kinds of things and bring them over for our family to try. I have to thank her because I am sure she started my love for Asian food. I remember her dumplings being the best and to this day I think I am always comparing any dumpling to my childhood memories. I have yet to find a dumpling that beats hers.

In my readings I came across a few good reviews for a place serving Shanghai style dumplings. Before I go on I should note that Shanghai style dumplings, or xiaolongbao (aka soup dumplings) are not the same as the normal dumplings you find in Chinese restaurants (or what my neighbor made). They really are bao too. They differ in preparation and texture to dumplings and wontons.

So, its back to Myeongdong again for lunch. Din Tai Fung is an internationally well recognized Taiwanese restaurant chain. I ordered the main xiaolongbao. Its filled with pork but they have many others to choose from. I also ordered the steamed pork buns (char siu bao; another obsession) and a new item spicy shrimp and pork wontons (steamed). Despite all of the good reviews, I was not impressed. I was expecting more because the reviews were pretty good . Now to be honest all three were good. However, I am very picky with my dumplings and bao. To be fair it could have been an off day so my rule is always give it a second try before giving up on a place. I have had much better and hopefully the next visit will live up to my high expectations.

Myeongdong Kyoja

I went to the famed shopping area Myeongdong for lunch. It's a good area to sip coffee and people watch as well as get some decent food for lunch. I prefer going to Myeongdong during the day because at night it gets really crowded with hoards of shoppers.

Myeongdong Kyoja serves up some good kalguksu and mandu (dumplings) at a good price. Their menu is short and everything is 8000 won. Kalguksu is a knife cut noodle soup with some ground beef and dumplings. The kimchi here, which can be very spicy at times, pairs very well with the kalguksu broth. Last time I was here I had the hottest kimchi ever! One of my students took me here when I was in Korea for the first time (2006) and I can't seem to come to Seoul without going here.

Kalguksu is supposed to be a good summertime meal and now that I am acquiring quite a taste for it I will be searching out some more places to find the best.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lDZg_AHo4Q4/Tg1f3sBRjKI/AAAAAAAAAPo/lCtKPytpTXM/s400/DSC01700.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624256919969565858" />
Here's what it looks like from outside. I find that I'm not really much of a blogger. However, I think I have found something to write about: food.

I am staying in Seoul for the summer and since I have a lot of free time on my hands I thought I would start writing about my time here. Basically I decided that its too hard not to talk about all the good food.

What better way to start off my time in Seoul than a trip to Noryangjin Fish Market. You just can't beat the value and freshness. It's certainly not a fancy meal out, but if you like good food like me and don't really care about the ambiance then this is the place to go. Also, its open really early which is good for when you are suffering from jet lag and can't sleep. I like going to see all of the live seafood tanks. You can find pretty much anything that swims here.

My friend and I arrived and as soon as we got out of the taxi we could smell the fish so I knew we were close. After looking around a little we settled on getting king crab, abalone, sea squirt, and prawns. We haggled for a good price, then the seller bagged up our "catch" and escorted us upstairs to one of the restaurants where they cooked it all up for us. Its recommended to tell the cook to "butta goey" (butter grilled) the abalone.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7L1W_hV3_ws/Tg1YfJ7ynxI/AAAAAAAAAPg/XlOexir0bOQ/s400/DSC01747.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624248801921507090" />
We also got the maeuntang (spicy fish stew). This is usually made up from the left overs if you get a fish, but you can order it even if you don't get fish. Let the soup cook for a long time and the broth becomes a fantastic masterpiece so good that it may cause you to dream about it days latter and will become one of the things you crave after leaving Korea.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cDhzuf0Ck7Q/Tg1X4q1XFgI/AAAAAAAAAPY/ZarkR7NUZic/s400/DSC01748.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624248140738008578" />
I will go again and get more pictures of the market.

Hello sports fans. It's been quite a long time since I have posted anything. Moving to Switzerland for a new job has kept me a little busy. So, last night I was able to attend my first European Pro League game. I currently live near Lugano, Switzerland and the just so happen to have a pretty good hockey team. In fact HC Lugano (in black) is probably the winningest team in the Swiss professional league. The Panthers have captured seven national titles and seen five other finals appearances since the 1985-86 season. There are 12 teams in the Swiss A league. Each team is only allowed four foreign players. Lugano has brought on former NHL-ers David Aebischer, Randy Robitaille, Jeff Hamilton, and Petteri Nummelin.

The game is pretty much the same with a less checking and a little more finesse. Don Cherry would love it. Ha ha!
Last night the SCL Tigers came to town from Langnau. The Tigers lack any big names. The only person on the roster is Oliver Setzinger, from the Austrian National Team. [Yes, I am a hockey nut.]
HC Lugano jumped out to a two goal lead 0:21 and 0:48 into the game and looked as though they were going to run away with it. But, the Tigers roared back with two goals before midway through the first. Lugano scored at around the 14 minute mark and took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission. The home team came out on fire and scored five goals in the second period. Lugano won 8-3.
Here are some things I took away from the game:
David Aebischer is not the goalie he used to be. I'm guessing his pride is getting in the way of his play. He just doesn't look like he is playing with any heart.
While I was watching the game, I notice each team had a player with a little different outfit. Well, it seems that each team's leading scorer gets to wear a "top scorer" jersey and helmet with flames included. It reminded me of the Super Nintendo sports games where your hot player would have flames coming off of him.

Below are some videos I took during some Lugano power plays:

Let the Adventure Begin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RdP78gEB6jg/SpvnpZarvPI/AAAAAAAAAOI/i7GEGMVKe1I/s320/DSC00005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376145278580276466" />I have arrived safely in Switzerland. While listening to my Asobi Seksu playlist, Pandora played a fantastic song by the band minipop from San Francisco. So, along with Asobi Seksu and Exit Clov on the east coast (see earlier post), there is good music coming from both coasts. I think all three of these band go very well together. I would love to see them all perform together.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RdP78gEB6jg/SgMaiErgH0I/AAAAAAAAANw/ixr6TvEQwIc/s320/minipop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333135556410875714" />Listen to minipop at myspace music. There is a really great cover of the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots. My favorite song from the list has to be "precious." Well, because it just is. Enjoy!

A New Job And A New Adventure

I have just recently landed what may be one of my ultimate dream jobs. Starting in mid to late August I will be moving to Switzerland to teach at The American School in Switzerland, or TASIS.

I have dreamed about moving to Switzerland since I first visited this beautiful country in the summer of 2003 to do my Masters Thesis research at CERN. This dream was further kindled when I traveled there during my Austrian-Swiss Adventure in the summer of 2005. Of the many places I've been to in Europe, Switzerland is has to be my favorite. I love the combination of cultures: French, German, and Italian. While the three regions have certain similarities to these cultures, they are also distinctly Swiss. Along with the medley of cultures there is another thing that has drawn me to this enchanting country. That is the landscape. To be more specific it is the beauty of the Alps and the gorgeous alpine waters, the steams and falls that are filled with glacial runoff. The valley of "loud waters," the Lauterbrunnen Valley, is one of my favorite area. Many who know me know of my love for Gimmelwald. This small enchanting village is located half way up a mountain in this area, which is a bit north of where I'll be.
TASIS is located in the south of Switzerland, just outside of a town called Lugano. This is the Italian area of Switzerland and it is very near the Italian border. The middle picture shows a wonderful view of the town along with Lake Lugano. The bottom picture shows a view from Lake Lugano. The school is about 1.5 to 2.0 Kilometers from Lugano.

TASIS is a very diverse school, having students from 42 different countries. This is far more than the boarding schools I've worked at here in The States where there have been only around 10-12 different countries represented. There are also a multitude of cultural learning opportunities outside of the classroom and away from campus. TASIS has a few different weeks where small groups of faculty and students travel to different European countries to learn about history, art, culture, and more. There are also travel weekends like this as well. And, the whole school goes skiing somewhere in Europe the week before the second semester begins. This is not a part of winter break. Its actually built into the schedule.
There are many more amazing aspects of TASIS, Switzerland, and Europe. I will try to write about as much as I can as I learn more and my adventure progresses.

May Day

Read about the origins of May Day.

Laziness and New Music

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RdP78gEB6jg/SdVSSLJnnhI/AAAAAAAAAMA/S2tSRMt_MVY/s320/exitclov.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320249006992367122" />So, it takes all the energy I can muster just to get out of bed and go to my soon to over job. For the most part I'd have to say it was a pretty good year. However, this year (starting February 18, 2007) will be Year of the Pig...my year...so, my expectations for 2007 are pretty high.

Here is what happened in 2006...

January: Rang in 2006 with friends out and about in Beaver Dam. It was a pretty good time despite being subjected to that stupid 'save a horse, ride a cowboy' song six times in less than two hours.

February: Season Affective Disorder.

March: Spring break saw me set some sort of record as I watched more than 35 movies in just under three weeks. I seriously doubt that I will come close to that number this year. Well, at least I hope not. I want to vow to be more active this year. Maybe I will go somewhere fun for spring break this year.

April: April showers bring May flowers.

May: End of my second year at Wayland. Sad end to the year for a few reasons, one in particular is the loss of our good friend and colleague Gardner (to grad school).

June: The World Cup: P.J., John, Juan, and I spent many hours watching nearly all of the soccer games in Wayland Hall on the big screen. Thankfully the games were on in the afternoon this time.

July: The highlight of my summer vacation, and pretty much the whole year, was my trip to South Korea and Japan (see earlier posts). I had a wonderful time visiting Asia for the first time. I am very grateful for my Korean students and their families for being such wonderful hosts. Thank you. I owe you all a lot.

August: The return from Asia brings on travelers remorse and depression, and horrible case of jet lag. I now know how our Asian students suffer after every 14 hour flight. It is certainly an ordeal to wake up hungry for diner at 4 a.m., and have no food to eat. I spent quite a few mornings waiting until 6 a.m. and walking down to Walker's for breakfast, hanging out with the locals. An interesting experience to say the least.

September: Start of my 3rd year at Wayland. Boy, how time flies. I got two new mentees this year, Mike and Ji Eun. I have seven wonderful mentees. I couldn't ask for a better group. Talked on email a lot with 'Steve,' one of my favorite former students.

October: Turned 35 this year. Got a new phone and an iPod. The iPod is one of the best inventions ever!

November: Went home to Michigan for Thanksgiving to spend time with the family. Set a new record for longest drive home: 10 and a 1/2 hours.

December: End of another semester. Finals seemed to go well. Went home to Michigan for break. Set a new record for shortest drive home: 7 hours and 10 minutes. Got to spend more quality time with my family. Played with my niece and nephew. Got to see my friend Kymberly from high school whom I haven't seen for over two years. Also, got to see my friend Becky whom I haven't seen in a few years.

I will be ringing in the new year with my friend Ben in East Lansing. Here's to 2007. Happy new year everyone.

Cheers!

Korean Food

Ok, I'm not sure what it is, but I have become completely obsessed with Korean food. After eating Korean food everyday for three weeks on my trip I want nothing else...Kimchi jjigae, Jampong, tteokbokgi, gimbap, samgyeopsal, pork bulgogi, mandu, sundae, and more. I can't seem to get enough. It is really great cuisine. There is nothing deep fried or oily like here in the US. Korean food is mostly made with natural ingredients so, it has a lot of appeal. It's also spicy, which I love. Unfortunately, I do not live very near a Korean restaurant so I am not getting Korean food as often as I would like.

New Music

Asobi Seksu is one of my new favorite bands. Their self titled album has to be one of the best albums front to back that I've heard in a long time. I don't care that it's two years old, it gets my vote for album of the year. They remind me of My Bloody Valentine, the Lost in Translation Soundtrack, old Stereolab, and a darker version of saint etienne. "Walk on the moon", which I haven't been able to get out of my head for days, and "Stay" are my favorite tracks.
Their newest album, Citrus, is also pretty good. My favorite track is "Thursday".

Weekend with Gardner

One of our teacher friends fled for the exciting life of graduate school at the end of last year. He came back to visit us during the fall long weekend break. We had a great time over the past four days. Spent some time in Madison, Milwaukee, and of course Beaver Dam. Went and saw "The Departed." It was pretty good. Since I haven't seen a movie in a while I'm not sure if I liked it because it was good or I liked it because I haven't seen a movie in a while. I think it's more of the former than the later. Milwaukee was fun too. This makes two weekends in a row that I've hung out there. After exploring some of the cool downtown places, we headed a bit north to check out a few more places. One area reminded me a little of Ypsi (Ypsilanti, Mi).

Back Log

This past summer I traveled to Japan and South Korea. I took a lot of pictures, and I put a few of them on the web here along with some breif explainations.

It was my first time traveling to Asia, and I had a really great trip. Those of you who know me, know that I don't do well with heat. So, with that being said, I was not looking forward to traveling to Asia during the hot (and rainy) season. Mostly it was not too bad. I did survive. I think the worst was the first week when I was in Japan, and it was hot and humid, with no breeze what so ever. Once I got to Korea the heat and humidity were a bit better. Not a lot though, I still sweat my butt off.

My trip started out in Yokohama, Japan. This is because I felt that I wanted to be able to do Tokyo without jet lag, and so that I could visit one of my students. [And let me tell you, the jet lag from a 14 hour flight is pretty bad. It took me about seven days to fully adjust.] I stayed at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese guest house. This was a great experience. Including not being able to communicate with the staff, and not finding any house slippers to fit. The picture to the right is basically what my room looked like. The room also had a bed roll to sleep on the floor.
From Yokohama, I went on to Osaka, and Fukuoka, where I took the jet ferry to Busan, South Korea.

More to come later...

Welcome to my new blog: EverRev.
